What do you mean, there’s a series titled Transformers: Energon? You’re a liar! A dirty liar!
you willingly store the Michael Bay movies on there
Oh, the movies are a billion times better than Energon. Everything else on this shelf is. Energon is the worst. It’s just 52 episodes of somebody’s terrible college demo reel.
The Bay movies are also only a couple hours. Energon is approximately 30 years.
I’m with Walky 100% here. Energon is TF’s lowest point, video-fiction-wise. And I include the See & Read videos in that assessment.
See, with a qualifier like that, I get curious. What would you say TF’s lowest point is in every category except video-fiction? The Beast Within? Kiss Players? Comic-Magazin!?
Part of what puts Energon at the bottom of the pile is that it’s not even awful in a so-bad-it’s-good sort of way. You couldn’t riff it. It’s just empty and dull. It’s not pretty, it’s not written, and it’s not even unpretty or unwritten in a way that’s fun to make fun of in-the-moment. Even Revenge of the Fallen has moments of grace and beauty and wit.
And so I’m not sure what’s the worst written comic or prose. The Beast Within is undoubtedly terrible, but it’s also AMAZINGLY terrible, and also mercifully short. It’s almost so-bad-it’s-digestible. Kiss Players isn’t badly put together, but its subject matter is offensive. Comic-Magazin is hilariously bad.
No, I think Energon’s non-video counterpart is Dreamwave’s Micromasters miniseries. It’s visually impenetrable and the story’s not interesting or even mockable. Beyond all those three things you list, trying to digest it is an actual chore. There’s absolutely nothing redeeming about it.
This video collection is missing Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory , Zone and Robots in Disguise. Also, has anyone released Beast Wars II or Neo in a box set?
